The Final Betrayal

Once again he sits, the dragon in desolation.
His lands surrounding, that of a bleak desert.

Still within sight is forest in all directions,
Filled with all things the world has to offer.

Trapped, with paradise in sight, the dragon lays still,
Too weary and wounded to move.

Once before he had been in such a situation,
But a unicorn had saved him and given him a new
form, a new life.

Now he lays with pain pulsing in every heartbeat.
The unicorn form he had so long been blessed
to keep, the powers he had once had, the beauty
he had once created – all stripped from him.

Betrayed by that unicorn who’d saved him.
Betrayed by that unicorn he’d trusted.
BETRAYED by that unicorn he’d loved.

Now, all is quiet.
Wearily, he raises his wounded head, causing vertigo
to accompany his painful anguish.

There.
Moving behind the trees.

White and powerful in its majesty, the unicorn
faces the dragon. The power of those eyes
laughs at him.

The dragon’s mind explodes with pain; the unicorn
attacks silently … painfully.

The dragon closes his eyes but cannot
escape the attack.
Opening his tear-filled eyes for one last
pleading look, he sees the heartless smile
of those traitorous eyes.

All is black.
All is silent.

The dragon lays lifeless, unable to move.
With his last strength he had given out his
final hope, his final strength, … his final love.
